Dhammaruwan’s Bio

Dhammaruwan, born in a traditional Buddhist village in Sri Lanka became known for spontaneously chanting suttas in his early childhood. Having begun his meditation practice in his early childhood with the teachings of Anagarika Munindra, Dhammaruwan has since associated many world renowned Dhamma teachers. He has over 35 years of meditation and Dhamma practice. While still a teenager, in 1987, Dhammaruwan co-taught his first residential retreat with Bhikkhu Wannasara. He was trained for many years under Bhante Henepola Gunaratana Nayaka Thero, during which time he took temporary ordination as Samanera Dhammaratana. Dhammaruwan is a graduate of Insight Meditation Society's Teacher Training Program USA (2005). He founded the Nirodha Trust and the Nirodha City Centre. Dhammaruwan teaches worldwide and brings his students a complex teaching in simple and easy language. Dhammaruwan, a single parent lives in Sri Lanka bringing up his two teenage children.

Teaching Methods

Dhammaruwan teaches with two distinct teaching styles: Insight Meditation Retreats and Nirodha Retreats. Please check when registering for Dhammaruwan’s retreats, which style the teaching will be in. Both teaching styles are extremely beneficial for participating yogis, allowing them to develop insight and come to the fruition of their path.

Insight Meditation Retreats.

These retreats are conducted in silence. They employ a technique where a yogi is guided through the insight knowledges (vipassana nyanas). They follow the meditation methods described in the commentarial interpretations of the Gautama Buddha’s teachings, which have been adapted to relate to contemporary society. In these retreats Dhammaruwan co-teaches with other teachers for typically larger groups of yogis.

Nirodha (Insight Meditation) Retreats

The term ‘Nirodha Retreat’ is only used to distinguish this style from the typical Insight Meditation Retreat. When Dhammaruwan teaches alone, he prefers to have smaller groups of yogis, around 16 to 20, allowing him to give more attention to the individual, rather than to the group as a whole. This allows Dhammaruwan to adapt his teachings according to the needs of the smaller group, which allows each yogi to really receive teachings that are suited completely for their individual practice.

is rather, taking the time to focus on the individual, taking into consideration their unique samsaric potential in the practice, allowing one to develop penetrative wisdom of the ultimate realities, arriving at a higher state of peace.

This form of practice may feel challenging at the onset, as we come to see self-deceptions and hypocrisies within us, despite the outward appearance of spirituality. Opening to realities and progressing past this stage, the practice becomes spontaneous and many hazy aspects of the ‘being’ become clear.

“Dhammaruwan’s depth of practice, warm and engaging manner, and wide-ranging understanding all became apparent to us. For this reason, I am very happy that he is now undertaking this important work, where all these qualities will undoubtedly bear great fruit.”
